Sponsored walk for seagrass
During the summer holidays, Samson Spooner, age 8 from Torquay, completed a sponsored walk to raise money for Wild Planet Trust and their vital seagrass conservation work.
Wild Planet Trust’s ‘Save our Seagrass’ project works with a team of volunteers to survey and monitor seagrass beds along the South West coastline. Samson, who is an annual pass holder at Paignton Zoo, is passionate about seagrass:
“Seagrass is a home for many species of animals including algae, anemones, rare stalked jellyfish and seahorses, and the roots are home to molluscs, tiny amphipods, polychaete worms and echinoderms and they provide a nursery for young flatfish. But we could lose all of that wildlife if we don’t help and make a difference.”
Along with his dad John, Samson walked from Beacon Quay in Torquay to Brixham, passing the top five seagrass beds along the way. He started his walk at 5:30 am and reached his destination at 9:30 am.
“So far I have raised £250 and I have more to collect when I go back to school. I expect to have over £300.”
Samson’s sponsored walk is a fantastic example of Wild Planet Trust’s belief that conservation begins at home.
